    The company was founded by Charles D. Smith.

  • 1941

    Charles’ son Donald joined the firm. The father and son team built Charles D. Smith and Sons by focusing on a single concept, “to exceed owners’ expectations.”

  • 1942

    The first large projects were primarily water treatment facilities, but business soon grew to include municipal and government buildings.

  • 1955

    Thomas D. Baker joined the firm as an estimator/project manager, after previously working summers as a laborer. Tom’s enthusiasm and building skills allowed him to rapidly progress within the company and soon, he was managing some of the firm’s largest projects.

  • 1964

    Charles D. Smith passed away and Donald became President.

  • 1974

    Donald’s son Gary joined the management team after receiving his BSCE from Marquette University. Gary’s extreme attention to detail and high standards have set the benchmark for quality through all aspects of the Company’s operations.

  • 1978

    Tom Baker was named President and continues to actively work in the office and manage C.D. Smith’s biggest leads.

  • 1982

    The name was officially changed to C.D. Smith Construction, Inc.

  • 1995

    Gary Smith was named President and CEO. That same year, Tom Baker was named Chairman.

    C.D. Smith continued to grow and expand, becoming one of the strongest contractors in the Midwest. Completing projects all over the State of Wisconsin and across the nation, the company continued to practice the same work ethic and techniques that Charles D. Smith put into place decades ago.

    C.D. Smith Construction unveiled a new brand identity.

    Still building strength and achieving success, the firm celebrates its 75th anniversary. C.D. Smith continues to be a closely held family business. Gary's brother, Patrick Smith, is Secretary and Safety Director. Gary's son Justin is Executive Vice President and his nephew, Michael Krolczyk serves as Vice President. Thomas D. Baker's two sons, Thomas J. Baker and Robert Baker, hold the positions of Vice President and Vice President of Finance. Tom's grandson, Joseph Baker, serves as a project manager.

    C.D. Smith Construction, Inc. Board of Directors appoints Justin A. Smith President and CEO following the passing of Gary M. Smith.

    C.D. Smith's annual revenue now exceeds $350 million. The company's belief in delivering quality in every aspect of its operation is held by every one of its 400+ associates. In recent years, C.D. Smith has completed major projects in almost 20 states. Their markets have expanded to Church/Religious, Correctional/Municipal, Educational, Government, Healthcare, Hospitality, Industrial/Commercial, and they continue work on Water Treatment Facilities.
